Sock Hunter Episode 25: Who Says Gray Socks Are Boring?
March 28, 2008 by knitterbunny
Hunting socks can be a time consuming process. While you may think that socks are everywhere, you would be sadly mistaken. There are sock “wannabes” everywhere, but only a wild handknit sock may truly be considered a sock worthy of photography by a sock hunter. It is akin to photographing an elephant in a zoo as opposed to an elephant in the wild, only one is a true challenge.
Whereas, one might also assume that the cherry on the sundae would be an intricately worked sock that exhibited true prowess in the execution of said sock, sometimes it is the elusive, but plain socks that give the most pause. Workable, serviceable, plain and yet, noble in their appearance; simple socks lend dash and charm to any occassion without overwhelming their surroundings.
*Cabled socks in particular, in a lovely workhorse yarn, are difficult to find in a state of relaxation. While most socks can be found reclining amongst the bushes after a hard day of foraging, a simple cabled sock’s day is never quite done. There is always one more bush to explore, one more route to defend, one more intruder to expel. So when one happens upon the faithful socks, it is quite a phtotographic opportunity.
Never underestimate the leisure ability of hardworking socks. They may be resting now, but at a moment’s notice, these socks will be bounding about, defending their territory from bright and dull socks alike. The behavior of socks can often be understood best when observing the plainer species, and I delight in my opportunity to continue observations.
While I continue my sock observations, I must bid you good night. Until next time, this is your Sock Hunter, signing off.

That’s a pretty shade of gray. And your right, never underestimate the workhorse socks!
Grey is way underappreciated. So is the word “workhorse.” Nice work on both counts!
Grey socks can be pretty, too!
Very lovely.
Certainly not boring. Great job they are beautiful!
