You know, I never had the urge to knit an Irish Hiking Scarf, until two nights ago. When I happened to scrounge through my stash and the handspun was calling to me, “Make me into the Irish Hiking Scarf.” I couldn’t well ignore that call, after all when the yarn tells you what it wants to be, you make it.
I rather think that the scarf came out well. I even used the suggested needle size, a US 8 and it worked out quite well. At the end of the scarf, I only had two yards left. So the pattern, the yarn, and the needles came together to create a lovely squooshy scarf. Did I mention that the yarn is my own handspun two-ply Isle de France/Dorset cross wool? It is, and I love that.

It looks FABBBBBBBBBBBBBBulous!
I love my IHS, you’ll be glad you made it!
I’ve been wanting to ask this for a while…do you have jet engines on the ends of your needles? Holy cow, that was fast!
I love when the yarn tells me what it wants to be. That came out gorgeous, and amazingly fast!
If you like the ruffle on the ends, ignore this comment, but if you don’t, read on. To avoid cable splay you need to start with 1 less st per cable at cast on. Then increase that needed sts on your first pattern row, generally in the middle of your cable. Then at the end you need to close those cables back up. On the last row before ribbing k2tog one time for each cable, generally in the middle of the cable. Most new knitters do not understand this basic rule of cables, so the end up with the ruffle effect. This holds true for most 4 st cables. If the cable is larger, such as a braid, you will need to increase more.
Oops, forgot to say, Lovely scarf! I love the color. It reads very berry red on my screen.
Ooo..it looks good! I remember barely eeking out my IHS too.
Oh how beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Yummy! I have made a couple of these and I love the pattern and the way it turns out.
Lovely yarn! It does look berry red.
Gorgeous!! :o) I love that pattern - I knit three IHS for Xmess gifts a few years ago. Yours looks so squooshy! :o)
Oh and Belated Happy B-day to your mom!
Beautiful! Perfect use of your handspun.
When yarn talks, knitters listen.
Glad you listened to your yarn. Beautiful job!
Oooo it came out so pretty. Can’t argue with with the yarn when it tells you what it wants to be.
